There are so many things I want my kids to grasp in their tiny hearts! I want them to really understand that they were made for greatness and know that I believe in them. So often, though, my words fall flat.

That’s why I love reading to my girls.

They can hear “You can dance, too” and “I believe in you” and “It will be okay” in a story and that resonates with them. They can see a character’s courage and strength and believe the same is possible for them.

Here are five of my favorite kids’ books that speak to the heart. These timeless truths can be shared with your tiniest ones as you read aloud to them and can then stretch into elementary school as they begin to read on their own. My kids love each of these.

  • Giraffes Can’t Dance

by Giles Andreae, illustrated by Guy Parker-Rees

Gerald the giraffe longs to dance, but his legs are too skinny and his neck is too long. His knees buckle whenever he tries to twirl. At the Jungle Dance, the warthogs waltz, the chimps cha-cha, and the lions tango. “Giraffes can’t dance,” they all jeer when it’s Gerald’s turn to prance. But there is one little creature who believes in Gerald. “Everything makes music,” the cricket explains, “if you really want it to.” So Gerald starts swaying to his own sweet tune.

With light-footed rhymes and high-stepping illustrations, this tale is gentle inspiration for every child with dreams of greatness.

  • Sisters

    by David McPhail

Sisters are different in so many ways, yet alike in many more. But there is one heartfelt way in which they are most alike – they love each other so very much.

David McPhail’s celebration of the joys – and trials – of sisterhood has been a favorite with sisters of all ages for almost twenty years. Now published in full color for the first time, in its original intimate size, a new generation of sisters will love to read this treasure . . . together.

McPhail also has a version for boys: Brothers.
