Rookie on Love

About the Book

A captivating anthology featuring an array of exclusive essays, poetry, and interviews as diverse and enchanting as the realm of love itself.

“A book that you wish more people had. Since so much of what feels wrong right now stems from a profound lack of empathy and understanding, Rookie is something of an antidote.”—Salon

Rookie magazine; [an] independent-minded role model to any number of girls, young and old, interested in building their own empire.”—The New Yorker

RookieMag is an online magazine made by and for teenagers (and their cohorts of any age). Founded by Tavi Gevinson when she was 15, Rookie has paved the way for a new era of teen media. Since 2011, it has inspired millions of readers by honestly addressing the adolescent experience and empowering young people to tell their own stories. Being a teenager is ridiculous, fun, extremely scary—you know, kind of like being a person. By examining the human experience through a teenage lens, we hope to make the enduring mysteries of being alive less confusing, or even kind of wonderful.

In Rookie on Love, writers, artists, activists, musicians, and readers explore their own relationships to the heart’s most powerful emotion. Whether it’s platonic or romantic, for yourself or family or fandom or your dog, love can feel both gloriously universal and achingly specific. This anthology examines that duality through a wide range of essays, poems, comics, advice, and interviews. Behold: the perfect companion to figuring out companionship!

Reviews

“A book that you wish more people had. Since so much of what feels wrong right now stems from a profound lack of empathy and understanding, Rookie is something of an antidote.”—Salon

“Many books for teenagers encourage independence and self-awareness, but few do so with this much honesty, humor, and style . . . It’s a lucky teen who receives this book as a gift, and a smart one who picks it up for herself.”—Publishers Weekly

“Rookie magazine; [an] independent-minded role model to any number of girls, young and old, interested in building their own empire.”—The New Yorker

“Containing poetry, essays, interviews, graphic short stories, and fiction, covering doggie love, Arthurian love, and grandmother love, the book offers a niche of love that all women can connect to. A thoughtful, light read celebrating a universal emotion.”—Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“The contributors, diverse in race and sexual orientation, range from current teens to adults who vividly remember their teen years. . . . Each voice lends itself to universal truths about love, sometimes in no-holds-barred language, making this a good choice for YA and new adult collections.”—Booklist
