She received her master’s degree from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
Today, her day-to-day life consists of working at the Highlights Foundation, organizing a yearly Latinx book festival as a program coordinator, creating book activities for a children’s book subscription company, going through her to-read pile, and squeezing in time to write.
Elisa Chavarri is an award-winning and New York Times-bestselling children’s illustrator. Her brush has brought to life many Latine culture works, including the Pura Belpré Honor-winning book,
Sharuko: El Arqueólogo Peruano / Peruvian Archaeologist Julio C. Tello, as well as books about fairy-tale wolves and cultural icons like Frida Kahlo and Taylor Swift. She graduated with honors from the Savannah College of Art and Design, where she majored in classical animation and minored in comics. Elisa hails from Lima, Peru, and resides in Alpena, Michigan, with her husband and two children.
